A Letter to the Membership

The Mobile Bay Chapter 117 Executive Board held a meeting on Wednesday, August 7th, 2002, to discuss chapter business. The main topic of discussion was finances and the continuation of chapter operations without financial support from joint ASIS and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) seminars.

Historically, our chapter participated with CFE to promote and produce joint full day seminars with a mixture of fraud and security related speakers and material. Our chapter involvement helped us to share proceeds from those seminars to subsidize our operating funds.

Support from ASIS members, in the form of paid attendance at the seminars, has diminished greatly over the past few years and it is now neither a fair nor equitable arrangement for our chapter or CFE. Since we did not receive the required minimum commitment of at least ten (10) ASIS members for the upcoming September seminar, this will not be a joint ASIS/CFE seminar.

Analysis of income and expenditures for the past two years indicates that we can manage operations without the seminar proceeds and without overburdening the membership with additional annual dues. We have taken great strides over the past months to reduce expenses and this has worked well as we are approaching the 3rd Quarter with more than $1,000.00 in the bank.  However, we must continually look for methods of income to pay for recurring expenses such as; the post office box and postage costs, luncheon expenses, speaker meals, subsidizing the Christmas party, and the cost of operating the website.

The Executive Board makes the following recommendations to the membership and requests a vote on the following options regarding membership dues and income for operating funds.

Members shall support the local chapter by paying non-transferable dues in one of the following methods:

$100.00 on or before January 1st. – Payments received on or before January 1st of each calendar year shall be $100.00. This method of payment entitles the member to meal-included luncheons for the entire calendar year and allows for tax filing or subsidized payment from the member’s company, government agency, or parent organization, in one lump sum.

$120.00 after January 1st. – Lump sum payments received after January 1st of each calendar year shall be $120.00. This method of payment entitles the member to meal-included luncheons for the entire calendar year and allows for tax filing or subsidized payment from the member’s company, government agency, or parent organization in one lump sum.

$35.00 Quarterly Payments – This method of payment allows the member without corporate or government funding support and who must pay dues on their own, to support the chapter through a quarterly payment method. Luncheon meals are covered as long as dues are current. If dues are not current the member must pay the full luncheon cost.

$15.00 Per Meeting Cost – Members who opt not to pay annual dues through any of the above plans shall be required to pay $15.00 for each luncheon meeting which includes the cost of the meal. Guests shall pay the same amount.

In summary, the existing method of paying dues at the beginning of the year remains the same. A quarterly payment method is added and luncheon costs are increased from $12.00 to $15.00. Dues whether paid in yearly lump sum or quarterly are not transferable to any other member.

The above options will be presented and voted upon at the August 21st, 2002 monthly meeting. All members present will have the opportunity to vote.

Respectfully,

 Robert E. Friedlieb, Sr.

Chapter Chairman
